The 28th Regiment at Quatre Bras
Painted by Elizabeth Thompson in 1875, The 28th Regiment at Quatre Bras depicts the Battle of Quatre Bras, fought on 16 June 1815 during the Waterloo campaign.
At the centre of the composition stands the 28th Regiment of Foot, formed in a defensive square as French cavalry closes around them. Thompson brought the viewer into the ranks, surrounded by smoke, confusion and the individual expressions of the soldiers.
In preparing the work, Thompson studied British soldiers and recreated elements of the battlefield to observe uniforms, figures and light from life.
Two days after Quatre Bras, the campaign culminated at Waterloo.
Today, The 28th Regiment at Quatre Bras belongs to the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.
